PREVENTIVE/GLAUCOMA EYE CARE
Covered by Medicare, Can Reduce
Risk of Blindness
Glaucoma is the second
leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the US and the most common cause
among African Americans and Hispanics. Anyone can develop glaucoma;
half do not know
they have it; those at higher risk are all people over the age of 60, African
Americans over age 40, relatives of people with glaucoma, those with diabetes.
However it is a very manageable disorder if
diagnosed early and treated correctly.
Early
detection is so important, that Medicare now and since 2002, covers glaucoma
screenings-eye exams for high risk, diabetic and those with family history of
glaucoma, as part of their benefits
